Infosec certs are not just about showing employers or the community/world at large that you have knowledge. They can help one feel like they actually do know things and can contribute. This is what happened for me.
I think it is time that certs stop getting such a bad rap.
@ScottMortimer CS in a University can do a good job of teaching basic networking, protocols and design. How OSes work and how to script and administer networks.
Certs are more current and have their place also.

Agreed. The only thing a CS university degree shows is that you can endure the curriculum and cost of a university degree. All things considered, they are equal in evaluating the desire of someone to obtain a piece of paper declaring that they have passed a credentialing process.
