Very long; about instances shutting down

It should be easier to sunset a Mastodon instance.

Theres lots of reasons they shut down. And that's going to be a fact of life. But the software needs to be aware of that reality.

1) Actors have PGP keypairs. They can prove your identity on a new instance, but currently, exports don't contain the private key.

2) Admins should be able to enable a "sunset mode" which among other things would show site-wide banners encouraging users to grab their exports

Finally, the data really shouldn't just.... Go away, barring each user grabbing their export and hosting it elsewhere.

What would be helpful is much much leaner software that reads Mastodon's database and serves it read-only. This would be helpful in the case of instance owners who couldn't continue to put in maintenance time or hosting resources. The read only instance would inherently require far less maintenance, and likely wouldn't need sidekiq, etc.

@r000t You obviously missed the Archive Team debacle, didn't you. ;)

@shellkr
Archive Team got involved (with knzk I'm assuming)? I'm suddenly very relieved.

@shellkr @r000t er, what's the Archive Team Debacle? 😳

Very long; about instances shutting down

@moormaan @r000t You can read about it on the internet.. but basically the Archive Team decided to archive a instance that shutdown without their consent. Which lead pretty big backlash.. at least one of the members of Archive Team had to quit.

@shellkr
Think this is it, or at least someone's account of it

@shellkr @moormaan @r000t yeah im all for people being able to make personal archives of their posts but microblogging / fedi has an expectation for a lot of us to be ephemeral, more or less. data loss wouldnt upset me personally

@opal
Mang I lost EN chat logs from the first few months (forgot to grab .folders) and on that day I swore that I lost data for the very last time.

@opal
Chemoing 4chan was the most fun I've ever had.

I wouldn't give up those memories for anything.

@opal
Although I just realized I'm literally a hoarder.

These nests of backups of dumps of copies of archives with most things duplicated 4 and 5 times are the big thing holding me up from streaming. I said "no streaming until I have this all sorted, deduplicated, indexed and properly backed up"

And it's been two months.

@r000t Even out little private instance needs these things. We've fired up an instance before but a tightening in the family e-services budget took it down and I didn't have the db skills needed to get the db exported (at the time).

I'd really like a maintenance mode and better migration/spin down tools too.
