Freedom of the Press Foundation is “Archiving the alternative press threatened by wealthy buyers”

They’re doing this with Archive-It which was developed by the Internet Archive and the goal is to try to save the online press from the "billionaire problem". News publications bought up and having their archives tampered with to remove stories or having then deleted altogether

all of the interviews and footage behind Jason Scott's (here as @textfiles) phenomenal BBS: The Documentary are going online!

it's one of my favorite things ever, and you should watch it if you haven't (getting to see several cult of the dead cow folks I used to read was particularly fun)

but if it catches your fancy and you have the time, volunteers are needed to add metadata to the interview archive

Quick GIMP tutorial: how to detour a drawing on a solid background to make it transparent while keeping antialiasing pretty quickly

1. do a quick want selection of the background
2. invert the selection
3. shrink the selection to one pixel (or more if the borders are thicker, may be better to get good antialias)
4. invert the selection again
5. use the "color to alpha" option and select the background color

And voila!!

Every once in a while I will remember that Uber had a black ops security team and was stupid enough to put them on the books.

If you plan on committing crimes on behalf of anyone, or paying someone to commit crimes on your behalf, make sure the first criminal you employ is a money launderer so that your crimes do not show up on your payroll.
